What is NVivo Mac?

NVivo Mac Release 1 is a native Mac application that lets users organize and analyze unstructured or semi-structured data like interviews, field notes, audio visual material and journal articles. Users can organize their material by topic to uncover trends and emerging themes.

There is also a version of NVivo Windows. If users want to work across platforms, it is worth considering whether the current release of NVivo for Mac has the features they need. For a detailed comparison of the features currently available on both platforms, refer to the Lumivero website.

NVivo versions

Previous NVivo releases had version numbers, continuing up to version 12. All releases since March 2020 are called simply 'NVivo', however, where necessary, particular releases can be identified by their 'release' number (e.g. 1.6), shown in the About information in the app.  

myLumivero

NVivo (Release 1) is integrated with online user 'myLumivero' profiles and accounts, accessed through the myLumivero portal. These are essential for use of cloud modules and in most cases for activation of NVivo client installations. See myLumivero in the NVivo user online Help for more information.

Compatibility with NVivo Windows

NVivo Mac Release 1 projects have a different file format from those created in NVivo Windows:

  • NVivo Windows (.nvp)

  • NVivo Mac Release 1 (.nvpx)

All conversion between formats must be done using NVivo Windows.
